Traffic Citation, Points, & Your Auto Insurance.

You've just received a traffic citation for speeding and you wonder what will happen is you just pay off the ticket...

Important Considerations

  • Points

Normally, moving violations carry anywhere from 2 to 4 DMV points being assessed against your driving record. If you have been unfortunate enough to receive other tickets you are aware it takes a considerable amount of time before the DMV will remove any point from your driving record. In North Carolina, any driver who receives a total of 12 points against his or her driving record will lose their license.

  • Increased in Insurance Rate

In North Carolina, to own and operate a motor vehicle on any public road you must have in force the statutory minimum liability coverage. Failure to do so is a crime. Traffic violations increase insurance premiums based upon the premise of increased risk; certain traffic violations carry insurance points which cause your insurance premium to increase significantly.

  • Non-Moving Violations

Typically, non moving violations do not carry DMV insurance points being assessed against your record.

  • Benefits of a Traffic Lawyer

It only makes sense to speak with a traffic lawyer when you've received a citation. Most traffic lawyer fees are minimal compared to the increased insurance premiums which you will pay over a considerable period of time. Likewise, many drivers which have problems due to tickets can be advised on methods to resolve their driving record problems and protect their driving privileges.

  • "DWI"

Driving While Impaired convictions carry stiff penalties in North Carolina. Permissible blood alcohol levels have dropped significantly and debate continues over the problems and consequences of individuals driving while impaired. Drivers charged with DWI for a first offense can qualify for limited driving privileges if certain statutory criteria are met. If you've been charged with a DWI, your first response should be to secure counsel. Ask a lawyer to explain how a conviction can be obtained and the standard. Understanding the law is as instructed to the jury will aide an individual in determining his or her best recourse.
